Ever since I was young—around 10 years old, or so—I’ve wanted my very own robot vacuum. That may seem like an odd statement; why would a little kid want a vacuum instead of, perhaps, a doll or a toyhouse or something?

The truth is, my mom was quite strict when it came to household chores. Once a week I was tasked to vacuum the entire house, top to bottom. While that in itself wasn’t too much trouble, having a robot do my chores, or at least part of it, was a dream.

When I moved out after college, guess what was among the first things I bought for my new apartment?

Getting yourself a robot vacuum is great, but it’ll be even better if it works silently. This is for many reasons:

• It won’t disturb you or your baby’s nap.
• It won’t interrupt TV or family fun time.
• It’ll allow you to work on your projects, homework, etc, without the jarring sound of suction and loud machinery.
• It’s ideal for the handicapped or elderly.
• It helps minimize the amount of time you spend on house cleaning.
• It’s small, compact, and can be stored virtually anywhere.
• It works on multiple types of surfaces, from carpets to wood floors.
• It’s incredibly efficient.
• It’s extremely easy to use.

Factors and Features to Consider When Buying a Robot Vacuum

Like many other products, robot vacuums, too, come with a myriad of features and functions. But how do you choose the best of the best?

Here are some tips that’ll help you decide:

Noise Level

Let’s start off with what I believe is the most important factor when buying a robot vacuum: the noise level.

The rule of thumb to follow here is this: the lower the decibel (dB), the better. But what exactly is dB, anyway? Well, dB is a unit of measurement that’s widely used in electronics, signals, and communication to measure sound levels.

The majority of robot vacuums produce less than 70dB, with some being as quiet as 45 to 60dB. To put that into perspective, that’s more or less the same volume of a dishwasher or a moderate rainfall. A quiet library is about 40dB. A whisper is about 30dB.

Atmospheric Pressure

The internal pressure of a vacuum dictates how much its suction capacity is. For robot vacuums, it’s identified and measured by its pascal (Pa) unit.

A vacuum that only has 1000Pa can only suck dust. If the power is above 2000Pa, however, it can handle dust, hair, food crumbs, debris, and other small particles.

As much as possible, choose a robot vacuum with a large Pa capacity so that it’ll suck most of the dirt and debris found in the home.

Dustbin Size

Robot vacuums come in multiple dustbin sizes. The larger the dustbin capacity, the less often you’ll need to empty out your robot vacuum.

To avoid the inconvenience of having to bend down every few minutes just to clear the machine’s dustbin, look for a robot vacuum that can hold a lot of debris and dust. This is especially true if you have a pet that sheds a lot.

I recommend you to search for a dustbin size of at least 0.5 liters. Any smaller, and you’ll be forced to empty it far too often.

Battery Life

One of the first things you should check when buying a new robot vacuum is its battery life. Just like its dustbin capacity, a robot vacuum won’t be of any use if it dies midway into cleaning your living room.

It’s not only frustrating, but it’ll force us to pull out our standard vacuum cleaners to do the job ourselves instead.

Decent robot vacuums can run for 75 to 160 minutes per session before needing a charge. Anything above 2,000 mAH is considered to be fairly good.

The battery life directly correlates to the size of the rooms you want to clean, as well. For example, a robot vacuum that can run for 45 to 75 minutes is ideal for small apartments, units, or townhouses.

But for medium-sized homes, it’s better to choose something that runs for up to 90 minutes per session. For larger households, get yourself a machine that has a run time of up to 200 minutes if you want the robot vacuum to clean in one swoop.

Smart Features

All robot vacuums come with their own smart features. But the real question here is this: how smart do you want your machine to be?

Some of the more high-end robot vacuums have webcam features, which allows them to double as security cameras. Some start on command at the sound of your voice or with the use of an application installed in your phone.

In addition to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice control, this powerful machine comes with an automatic cleaning feature, wherein it cleans itself for up to 60 days, multistory mapping, and personalized cleaning suggestions.

Guided by the vSLAM navigation system, the i7+ gathers over 230,400 data points per second to allow it to navigate in neat, efficient rows. This means that the more it learns your home’s layout, the better it cleans.

It can also target specific areas within your rooms, like in front of the couch or under a table, to make sure it’s always clean.

Furthermore, it comes equipped with multi-surface rubber brushes that don’t get tangled in pet hair, making it ideal for homes with pets. The fact that its filter traps 99% of cat and dog allergens is a welcome bonus.

When it comes to smarts, it’s difficult to beat the F007C. Although it doesn’t work with Alexa or Google Assistant like the iRobot Roomba i7+ and the Roborock S6, the F007C is smart enough to gracefully avoid most obstacles while quickly covering a lot of ground.

The remote it comes with allows you to choose 1 of 6 cleaning modes, whether it be automatic cleaning, edge cleaning, or small-space cleaning. It also has an automatic carpet pressurization system that can be set in place with a push of a button.

That, in addition to a self-charging mode, makes it a pretty convenient tool to have around. Plus, it’s extremely affordable! I’ve seen models with similar features at twice the price and more.

Coredy Robot R3500 Vacuum Cleaner: Best Value

Other than it’s incredible performance, the Coredy Robot R3500 is one of the most beautiful robot vacuum machines I’ve laid my eyes on. It’s sleek and looks quite modern, especially with its blue blinking lights.

This unit comes with 4 selective cleanings modes: automatic, spot, max vacuuming, and edge cleaning. Depending on your cleaning preference, you can operate the machine with a single push of a remote.

You can also set a cleaning schedule according to your living habit, which is a feature I love when it comes to robot vacuums. It’s certainly nice to have a fully automated machine that knows when to clean, and when to retreat.

In addition to the unit and its dedicated charging dock, the Coredy Robot R3500 comes with 4 side brushes, an additional high-efficiency filter, and 2 separate cleaning blushes.

It’s fully equipped, so you don’t need to purchase anything extra like many models often ask you to do.

As for its noise level, you’ll be happy to know that it’s rated at a low 45 to 65dH, depending on where it’s cleaning.

The Verdict

It took me a surprisingly long time to decide what the best robot vacuum is out of the 6 units I’ve reviewed. Each product comes with its own unique selling points, so I can tell you for certain that any of the above options is a great pick.

However, I believe that the Roborock S6 Robot Vacuum shows the best balance of being the quietest and the most effective cleaner out of all its competitors.

Although it’s not the quietest robot vacuum—that title falls to the GOOVI F007C, hands down—it’s one of the strongest and smartest machines I’ve come across. You definitely won’t regret getting yourself one. Frankly, I’m quite satisfied with mine!
